Recently, there has been an increase in a scam targeting Emory faculty, staff and students, where callers claim to be from the Internal Revenue Service. Often, the callers will spoof their phone numbers and it will appear that they are calling from the IRS, FBI, GBI, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, Department of Homeland Security, law enforcement or other government agencies.

As a reminder, the IRS, FBI, GBI, USCIS, DHS, law enforcement, or other government agency will never:

• Call and demand immediate payment over the phone;
• Demand payment with a prepaid debit card, gift card, or ask for your credit/debit card number over the phone; or
• Threaten to call the police or immigration authorities.
